Wraparound protection
This modification was carried out by Burkhart, an Austrian C1 biker,
who built a full weather-protection cover for the C1.
Who hasn’t thought about making our C1’s weather protection even more complete? I think everyone has — or at least anyone who has had to ride through rain and a side wind that finds its way straight, and rather cruelly, to the neck.
Well, our Austrian fellow rider Burkhart Kratzer has turned this shared idea into reality.
Using the protection of the original BMW kit as a foundation (already excellent in itself — Ed.), he built a wraparound “tent” around this original accessory, using sailcloth, to cover the C1 cabin’s full height and half its width.
The structure uses clips along the fabric side curtains and the C1’s original luggage-rack mounting points. This allows the upper, clipped-on section to be released like a door for easier entry, while the lower section remains firmly attached to the C1. Burkhart assures us that it is still easy to remove completely: it takes just one minute to pack it away in the top case, for example.
As for protection, the author says it stayed quite warm inside even when the outside temperature was 3 degrees — and, given that he is Austrian, we can readily believe it — because less warm air from the radiator escaped.
Burkhart does stress that the C1 is more susceptible to instability in strong winds: the sail effect cannot be avoided. Even on the motorway at 110 Km/h, however, stability is good and overall comfort is improved, provided you are not riding in the wake of a large lorry.
